Just a heads up to you other specifiers that have acoustical sealants by name in your masters. MasterSpec includes products listed under a paragraph for exposed acoustical sealant joints where the sealant is intended to be paintable, latex-based, and conform to ASTM C834. Most of the listed products are fine it seems. However, I've found that USG's "SHEETROCK Acoustical Sealant" is "not intended to be painted," even though it conforms to ASTM C834 and is latex-based. Additionally, Tremco's "Tremco Acoustical Sealant" (assuming this is the "Acoustical/Curtainwall Sealant" listed on their website) is apparently not paintable, is not latex-based, and also does not conform to ASTM C834. I guess this is why MasterSpec includes the following disclaimer, "Before retaining names [of manufacturers and products], verify that products correspond with other requirements and are both available and suitable for the applications indicated." |

thanks I will place this in the comments for the writers to use when next updating that section. which is not due for a bit...so yes "before retaining names ..." is always good practice |

Marc, is there a schedule of updates to MasterSpec sections available on the Avitru/Deltek website, per chance? I would be interested in knowing what the update schedule is for the sections MS produces. It would be very helpful to me in planning my office masters updates... thanks |

Marc, Thanks for the quick response, and for making note of it for the next update. Although, I understood that changes to manufacturers and their named products could happen at any time, and that is why MasterSpec's Paragraph Builder tool in MasterWorks connects via the internet to pull the names of manufacturers and products. Is this not correct that changes to the products in the Paragraph Builder can be addressed outside of the normal update schedule? Also, I agree with anon, I'd like to know if there is a schedule of updates for MasterSpec sections that is available for MasterSpec subscribers to view. |

Now that is an idea. However... our update schedule is usually about 2 quarters out...beyond that it gets really fuzzy. within that two quarter schedule, life happens...we have a section scheduled and the writer gets sick, or some other thing happens to "push" it to the next quarter and we do. So we are always massaging the sections until quite late. Now, although that is not good news for those of you who want stone tablets to plan your updates upon....what always helps is user input. If every one of you started commenting about how section 123456.78 was out of step with the community... that section would get looked at sooner than later. and don't forget it is not just basic content...IgCC get married to ASHRAE 189.1 and we have how many sections that need updating? not to mention ASTM and other standards changes... anyway, you get my drift....If I can find a way to let the world know earlier than later I will. but please don't hold your breath! |

per other Anon.....yes paragraph builder is more current than any section...another reason for always checking the mfr's literature before printing that spec |

I know that I am derailing this conversation. Marc, where can we request new sections to be written? For example MasterSpec has been missing linear wood ceilings for years and I have them on almost every school project that I write. Thanks. David G. While David is asking, can I also request a section for HPL cladding (composite wall panels)? ... and for fiberglass doors and frames? ... and for facade access equipment? ... and for facility fall protection? Or back to David's question; where can we request new sections be written? I'm sure pestering you on 4specs is not the best way to handle this. |

most but not all sections now have a "Content Request" box at the beginning of the section where these can be submitted Link here: https://user.avitru.com/ContentContact.aspx?sect=064219&ver=12-01-15&format=FL&sid=11848 The same link without connection to a section is https://user.avitru.com/ContentContact.aspx It will display the section you are in when generating the comment, ask for your name and email and then gives you a comment box for your comment. If you don't own MasterSpec yet or have some other issue you can also certainly use the "contact us" button and select "subscription renewals on the Avitru website and that will be forwarded to the appropriate folks, although the sales people will want to sell you as well and last but not least contact me here or at marcchavez@deltek.com if needed |

Back off the sidetrack.. Interior latex sealant has far more expansion capability than virtually all interior paints. How much movement do you expect in an interior assembly? For me it's near zero. OTOH, companies have been sued with class-action suits for hot coffee. USG & Tremco's lawyers see risk where there is nearly zero. I simply leave them out of my spec for interior exposed "acoustical" sealant. ASTM C 834 works for me. I do like to specify a non-skinning sealant for concealed applications because the sealant is often laid down hours before the framing and drywall. |
