Use in Type V construction. The panel itself is OSB. If you have any reservations about OSB, look very closely before specifying this product. Like other similar gypsum panel products coming into the market, the secret to success is detailing joints and penetrations and keeping the installers from overdriving fasteners which can compromise the membrane. All of that being said, we have seen this around in the Houston area and have specified it on one or two projects with some success. J. Peter Jordan, FCSI, AIA, CCS, LEED AP, SCIP

Thanks Jeffrey, that would be great. I did some research on the Huber Zip System this past weekend, it was patented back in 2006, its amazing I have never specified it. I also learned that LP Products came out this year with their own version, named the Weatherlogic Air and Water Barrier System, of course Huber immediately filed a patent infringement suit against LP. |

What J. Peter said. I would use Zip Sheathing in a lot of climate areas IF I had confidence in the field quality control. But I would not recommend this system in a high wind design location such as Daytona Beach. You will get water infiltration the next time a tropical storm or hurricane goes by unless you have perfectly installed product; see LinkedIn posts by M. Steven Doggett. I would instead recommend a conventional sheathing with a fluid-applied air/moisture barrier. And mold and moisture resistant gyp bd on the exterior walls. |
