The OSU Building Design Standards prohibits mineral core wood doors but we have been able to get a variance due to specifying a specific Algoma blocking configuration (called Algoma Model D at the time).

Then Marshfield and Algoma merged and I was told by the Marshfield rep that the designation for that blocking style was called Configuration #11 so I duly updated our master to include that name change.

Now MarshieldAlgoma is part of Masonite and there are no blocking designations/drawings to be found anywhere on the Masonite website. Masonite also says it has no Ohio rep (what the heck!) and the only number if could find to call was the corporate office. When I called the 800 number, the switchboard operator cut me off and said I had to call another number and, of course, it went directly to voice mail.

Is anyone else familiar with the blocking configuration I am talking about? I'm trying to find information on the other wood door manufacturers we include as equals but am having no luck finding anything on their websites either related to blocking configurations. Very frustrating.

Tracy, If you can't specify mineral core wood doors do you only specify steel fire-rated doors?

Below is drawing showing blocking locations in an Assa Abloy mineral core wood door.

David, that is our only choice if we don't get the variance from OSU (specify steel fire doors when rating has to be higher than 20 minutes).

Thank you for sharing the ASSA Abloy detail, their GB18 (far right) looks very similar to the Algoma detail!

David, can you provide a link to the drawing? I am not finding it when I do an online search.

Thanks!

P.S. And Masonite needs to figure out how to serve the specifiers AND provide better information on its website. Finally heard back from the person I was referred to by the switchboard operator who told me she couldn't help me because she doesn't deal with doors. She is having to figure out who within the organization can answer questions about the doors and will give them my name and telephone number. Glad this wasn't for something that had to go out this week!

I believe you can get a 45-minute (or better) rating on a flush wood door with a wood stave or structural composite core. The structural composite is not the same as a mineral core and should not require supplementary blocking.
