I have an installation where the markerboards (name brand from a reputable manufacturer) are being used as projection surfaces for "smart/interactive" applications. They have "hot spots" which are causing issues for students and teachers.

This is a first for me. Anyone else have this sort of problem?

Was the markerboard surface designed as a projection screen surface?

Yes; the manufacturer claims the surface is suitable for both markerboard and projection surface applications.

Maybe they need to change the type of projector to an ultra-short-throw type.

Peter,

Years ago I had the same reflectance issue on markerboards, so I specified low-gloss markerboards. Then the teachers complained the low-gloss markerboards were hard to clean and caused "ghosting". So I went back to specifying regular markerboards.

There are manufacturer's recommended procedures for breaking in a new markerboard. These procedures slightly dull the finish since a new markerboard is actually hard to write on because it is too slick.

I would check with the manufacturer and see what they recommend.

The answer: Slate and chalk.

Slate has poor qualities for use as a projection surface.
