We've got a project with a client who really wants black hardware. The hardware items they like are not available with a black finish as a standard, so the idea of powder coating has come up. Does anyone have experience having door hardware or similar items powder coated for a project?

You need to understand that “Powder Coating” is not a specific term. It relates to a process. You can powder coat any paint that you can powderize - and that is virtually everything. The common types of powder coating are acrylic, polyurethane, epoxy, PVDF (‘kynar’ based). And even then it depends on the reputation of the coater.

In the end though, paint is paint. It’s not going to last on a high use contact item, or where there is any where on the item in its use (metal to metal, or other hard materials).

And, from experience in writing hardware specs for 40+ years, coating the item is going to void the manufacturer’s warranty for most items. Not just that the coating is not warranted, but the entire item will have no warranty.

But, you should look around, many manufactuer’s do make black finishes now. And you need to ask if you don’t see it as some do it as a custom process and just don’t list it.
