Does anyone have a retractable canopy specification to share with me? This is the product the architect wants to use: http://www.shadefxcanopies.com/retractable-canopies/ Has anyone else noticed that more and more manufacturers do not have architectural specifications on their website? Of course when they do the specification is usually poorly written but at least it is a starting point. I am noticing a serious lack of technical information. How does a manufacture expect to get specified on projects if they don't have technical information? David G. Axt, CCS, CSI, SCIP Specifications Consultant Axt Consulting LLC |

Very cool product David, have you reached out to the manufacturer maybe you can resell the spec you develop to them for use on their web site, this looks like a scaled down version of the retractable roofs used on stadiums, perhaps that would be a place to start. |

The system looks similar to a motorized skylight roller shade, so that might be a good section to use as a starting point. MasterSpec covers skylight shades fairly generically in Section 122413. Jeffrey Wilson CCS CSI SCIP Wilson Consulting Inc Ardmore PA |

David, I feel your pain. Many manufacturers don't realize they should be marketing to Architects and Specifiers. Their websites target building owners and contractors. If you are enthusiastic about this particular product, you should initiate a conversation with their marketing department. Seems to me, adding a few items to your website and listing on 4specs.com is an inexpensive way to expand your market. Try looking at a competitor's website, something like Somfy Systems. That might help you sort out component parts and requirements, which you could share with the original manufacturer. That said, for many of my private bid projects (especially retail), the selection of awning manufacturer and other Div 10-12 items is made by the Owner, and it doesn't matter what I write in the specifications beyond Basis of Design and some submittals. - |
