I have a client who is demanding I include a spec for resealing an existing asphalt parking lot, not my responsibility, but he is being very demanding. The craziest part is the Architect's client is a County Parks Department, you would think the Parks Dept does this as part of their maintenance, but apparently the director of the Parks Dept has asked "the Specifier" to include a spec that will his make "his parking lot look like new", after my week of hell from H Irma, would you like to guess how I would like to respond to the director? To be fair, I am providing specs for a new community building and a renovation of a shelter, but my agreement specifically excluded any civil work, of course the Architect has countered that this is not civil work, so I seem to be screwed, pardon my French. I officially reopened my office this morning, and have been on the phone all day, none of my contacts have been able to come up with a CSI spec for this. The Parks Director wants a separate spec section, not part of a paint spec, am I being punked? Unfortunately not, the job is being prepared in 16 div Masterformat, but at this point I will take any spec, I know this Park director is setting me up, but I don't know why. And to add to the drama, the park project is in Homestead, which got hit pretty hard by H. Irma, so this job will probably be delayed anyway. |

MasterSpec Section 321216 includes "Fog Seal" for rejuvenating existing asphalt pavement surfaces. The spec could be edited to address only sealing. Jeffrey Wilson CCS CSI SCIP Wilson Consulting Inc Ardmore PA |

You should check the government agency of which the Parks Department is a part to see if there is a "standard spec." Here in Houston, the city probably has one, as does the county and of course there is always TxDOT. You might also reach out to the civil engineer. J. Peter Jordan, FCSI, AIA, CCS, LEED AP, SCIP

Suggest that the expertise to write such a specification likely resides in a civil engineer who regularly designs and specifies paving. |
