This came up on a project in the southeast. In this case the building department enforces the IBC but in their amendments they have replaced chapter 10 with NPFA 101. NFPA Life safety code is the overriding code in this jurisdiction and it calls for 2 ¼” clearance for hand rails. This overrides the standard 1 ½” we have been using. Tony Leto was in our office last week. He has a lot of information about the confusing requirements for railing height, diameter, and clearance. His comment about the larger clearance was that firefighters like it because they wear bulky gloves. |
