I Have been advised to reference AISI S220 in lieu of ASTM C645 - Standard Specification for Non-Load Bearing Steel Studs, Runners, and Rigid Furring Channels for Screw Application of Gypsum Board. This recommendation came from a steel framing engineer. Can any of my peers verify this?

Dave, AISI S220 is referenced in the FBC 2017 Draft, while ASTM C645 is not.

i found this in some literature by clarkdietrich: Regarding non-structural steel framing, the next thing to watch for is the emergence of the
new AISI standard, AISI S220: North American Standard for Cold-Formed Steel Framing—
Non-Structural Members. This new standard has been adopted by the 2015 International
Building Code (IBC) and eventually will replace ASTM C645 as the universal industry
standard for the specification of non-structural steel framing. Until then, the guidelines and
requirements of ASTM C645 and C754 should be followed.

Thanks Robin, looks like I've been duped by the Marinoware Engineer, I know that there is no love lost between these two firms.

Dave, I erred in my statement to you, both AISI S220 and ASTM C645 are referenced in the 2017 FBC Draft.

As a spec writer how do you choose between two industry Standards recognized by the Building Code? Should I be referencing both Standards in future Specifications?

I am sure that a number of you will have more substantive comments, but my impression has always been that an ASTM standard undergoes more rigorous review by a more diverse group than an ANSI standard. We will typically use the ANSI standard (e.g., door hardware and ceramic tile installation) where comparable ASTM standards do not exist.

On the flip side it's interesting that some ASTM standards, including ASTM C645, refer to AISI standards to establish certain criteria.

Jerome, I would hesitate to list both only because I don't know if the two standards contradict each other in any way.

Do we know when IBC plans on switching to AISI and whether they will delete reference to ASTM C645? ClarkDietrich wasn't really clear on that point.

I miss my ASTM membership at times like this.

AISI S100 is for STRUCTURAL studs and AISI S220 is for NONSTRUCTURAL studs.

MasterSpec Section 054000 Cold-Formed Metal Framing refers to both AISI S100 and S220 (and S210, S211, S212, S213). Section 092216 NonStructcural Metal Framing does not refer to any AISI standard.

Both SSMA and SFIA technical standards refer to S100 only.

Keep in mind that 054000 is for CFMF, both load-bearing and non-load-bearing. Division 09 studs are not considered CFMF and therefore do not qualify for AISI S220.
