I am currently working on a project where the site sign is constructed of weathering steel (Corten). The architect has asked me to help find a product that will protect the steel and make it easier to clean when the sign is vandalized.

Do you have any experience with anti-graffiti products for Corten steel?

I don't have experience, but ignorance has never stopped me from having an opinion.

Preweather the steel, then apply any anti-graffiti coating. The coating may not adhere forever to the rust, but hey, the sign only has to last the duration of construction.

I am curious... What is being used for graphics on the corten?

I am assuming that any coating applied on the steel will interfere with the weathering process. I have never put a coating on weathering steel before but thought I would ask the group for their experience.

The graphics are cut out (negative) letters.

I recently specified weathering steel for a project, but we did not apply any coatings. I tend to agree that a coating would interfere with the weathering process, which is meant to continue indefinitely, and which produces a protective coating for the steel. The best thing would be to contact Zahner, who developed "Solanium Steel", a multi-step process for achieving the pre-weathered steel finish. They may have suggestions, as well as cautions about coatings.

i am assuming the architect knows all the risks regarding staining of surfaces surround the cor-ten. A clear coat will inhibit the weathering. What about taking standard steel, acid washing for the same rust appearance, then clear coat? I have a spec for that if you need it.

Great stuff, especially on a nice concrete base. I'm surprised that it seems to be making a comeback; US Steel warned against using it for architectural applications. Here's the look without the problems: http://www.cortenazp.com/

I, too, am surprised at the comeback that CorTen is making. Designers seem to be oblivious to the potential issues, both aesthetic and structural. The structural problem may be more acute for the sheet goods that designers want to use. Zahner does offer a "pre-weathered" steel which seems not to be CorTen (weathering steel) since it does not continue to weather. At least one other manufacturer offers a weathered steel look alike (not nearly as good as the Zahner product).

Make sure your designers know what they are talking about before you plug in your ASTM standard for weathering steel; it may be something that looks like CorTen, but is more stable and won't stain.

There are powder coats that simulate the look of Corten. See Parasoleil's Cor-11 at http://parasoleil.com/materials.

Brian Payne,

Please tell me about your experience with the Sherwin Williams Sher-Clear 1K product that you recommended. What type of application did you specify it for? Was there any noticeable change in gloss after the coating was applied? How long has the coating been in service and how does it look now? Was the steel vandalized and how well did the graffiti clean up?

Thanks.
