For a conference room partition, 1 inch face size frames were special order with a long lead time. Ill-timed ordering exacerbated the long lead time making it a long-long lead time. They looked OK but not worth the wait. You will get a straight edge edge instead of an edge with a return. You can also order these frames from a custom hollow metal shop. The cost will rise, but you can get them quickly. J. The firms I worked with would also develop a number of "custom" profiles to fit specific conditions. It was my understanding back then (up to 1980) that HM work was custom-fabricated by a number of shops and that you could also get frames hot-dip galvanized after fabrication. Hollow metal work is now divided between "standard" frames defined by SDI and custom frames defined by NAAMM. It is my understanding that the options for profiles under SDI are somewhat limited, and typically have 2-inch frame width and 5/8-inch stops (see https://www.steeldoor.org/drawings.php). Your life is going to be much easier if you stick to these profiles. Custom work is going to conform to NAAMM HMMA 860 or 861, and I believe that all SDI members are capable of fabricating to that standard. SDI currently lists 11 companies who are members of SDI. These manufacturers will typically manufacturer doors to either standard. It is also my understanding that when you call for a glavanized door or frame, it is fabricated from galvanized (or galvanealed) steel sheet, not galvanized after fabrication. J. Not an insurmountable problem, but be sure to consult with your hardware consultant to confirm that the custom frames will work with the hardware. Also, check with Steelcraft to see if they are still producing FN series frames with 1" faces. If so, this would be an SDI standard product. We've had Stiles (http://www.stilesdoors.com/products/frames/#tabs=0) on a number of projects for HM work recently and they indicate 1/2 inch as their minimum face dimension, so they may be worth a call. I think everything they do is made to order. These were attached to the door frame head and provided the footprint necessary to capture the closer's mounting bolt pattern, which was much bigger than the narrow frame.
