Has anyone specified magnesium oxide wall board as an alternative product to gypsum wall board. This has come up a couple of times, but has never been incorporated into the final specifications. It looks like this time, it may stick. Am looking for feedback, perhaps a specification that someone has developed. J. Peter Jordan, FCSI, AIA, CCS, LEED AP, SCIP

I have not specified magnesium oxide wallboard in the past but am glad to have it brought to our attention, as it appears to be an environmentally friendly material with good properties. A quick search in Wiki led me to a very informative Magnesium oxide wallboard page. The raw materials are not common in US or Europe so it is likely to come from China. Otherwise it has some very useful properties and does not require a paper facing. ICC Evaluation Services has developed a set of Acceptance Criteria for fiber-reinforced, magnesium-oxide-based sheets, which could be readily translated into specifications language. |

I'm not sure if this magnesium Oxide wall board is the next greatest thing; but, being from an area that was zinged badly by Chinese wall board, I would not be quick to specify anything from China. |

While there does seem to be some of this coming from China, there also seem to be a few manufacturers here in the US. Sometimes it is hard to tell who is an importer distributor and who is actually making the stuff. J. Peter Jordan, FCSI, AIA, CCS, LEED AP, SCIP

Magnesium oxide concrete is turning up in broducts besides wallboard. https://www.concreate.net/ uses MgO as the substrate for portland cement concrete floor plank. Interesting product. They use it to avoid the environmental costs of using full thickness portland cement. Made in China, but the QC appears to be good.
