Does anyone have a resource for manufacturers of metal fire escapes? Haven't been able to find much in a search for manufacturers in the U.S.

I have never designed or specified a traditional fire escape but I suspect that these are inherently design-build items where the fire escape fabricator can rely on their standard details and load charts to tailor a solution for each condition.

I believe in most places metal fire escapes no longer meet building code requirements. That would explain the lack of manufacturers; though like interior steel stairs, these would often be fabricated by a miscellaneous metal fabricator. Replacement of existing is most likely okay, but they would probably require engineering, whether by engineer of record or delegated design.

Due to the historic building stock, hundreds if not thousands of fire escapes are still in place in San Francisco, so there still are many firms involved in fabricating and installing them. Fire escapes still get added when an existing building is remodeled, such as converting an attic to living space.
