This is new spec section month, so same client with the Silva Cells request, also wants a spec section on River Rock. Now I know what river rock is, however I don't quite understand how to write a spec for it?

Or perhaps someone familiar with 4specs listing for 044120 - Field Stone & River Rock can tell me which company sells River Rock?

My opinion is to check local large distributors for what they have and learn from there. What is available in Florida WILL be different than California and New Jersey. Try and find alternate sales sources and specify their names and as many physical properties as you can determine.

In Colorado, I've seen it used as veneer on foundations (in the mountains) and as landscaping material. 2 pretty different spec sections.

The spec request came from a Landscape Architect, so I would guess its being used as a landscaping material, however I guess I will need to look at the drawings again...for some reason the LA is being secretive - I was given a list of materials to prepare spec sections for each one, none of the products have I ever specified, so I am researching the availability of spec resources, for Rock Salt Concrete it will be conversations with an installer, as I've not found a viable source for Rock Salt Concrete spec in Florida.
Precast Rock Salt Concrete Pavers I've not yet found.

They are listed in:

32-9452, 32-9455, 33-4300

From their website:
Silva "Cells are used under paving as a means to deliver soil to support tree growth and absorb stormwater right where it falls." Intended for root growth under paving.

Not exactly a CSI section. Tough to add new sections for specialized products.

We have called them several times to consider a showcase listing ad, or provide a free 15-wrod description with no response.

I'm no help. The last time I specified river rock was as the decorative and protective cover over a roof assembly, so it ended up in a DIV 07 roof section.

This was for a University Earth Sciences building where they knew their rocks. Multiple floor setbacks had windows looking down onto the low slope roofs. We went to some length selecting and specifying locally sourced, softly rounded stones with the largest dimension being between 2 and 3 inches.

We had an initial sample submittal process where we selected a stone type and source. Then we did a mockup on the roof. The mockup passed when we emptied half a bag of the initial sample onto the mockup and couldn't tell which was which.

River rock is hard to get now, even here in New England where we have lots of rivers to wear it smooth. I think most of it is bought bagged, and brought in from elsewhere. Obviously there are lots of size and color considerations for such a product, so the LA really has to get more specific, I think. (ha ha, oh yeah, specific is what specifiers are all about!)
