I believe that fire-rated door assemblies are tested up to 8 feet high by 4 feet wide. However, for oversize fire-rated door assemblies which exceed the sizes of tested assemblies, door manufacturers can provide certification that their doors comply with standard construction requirements for tested and labeled fire-rated door assemblies except for size. This is usual specification language. |

Actually my Assa Abloy Rep, Hugh Williamson advised that Ceco manufactures a door that will work for 9ft high opening. |

I find it interesting that the 2012 IBC limits fire-rated door leaves to 48 inches (There are a couple of door manufacturers who have tested door assemblies with door leaves greater than 48 inches and double doors in excess of 96 inches, including assemblies with magnetic hold-open hardware; I'm not sure how the Code feels about that.) but no apparent maximum limitation to the height of the doors. Below taken from IBC 1008.1.1 Size of doors (sans exceptions): The minimum width of each door opening shall be sufficient for the occupant load thereof and shall provide a clear width of 32 inches (813 mm). Clear openings of doorways with swinging doors shall be measured between the face of the door and the stop, with the door open 90 degrees (1.57 rad). Where this section requires a minimum clear width of 32 inches (813 mm) and a door opening includes two door leaves without a mullion, one leaf shall provide a clear opening width of 32 inches (813 mm). The maximum width of a swinging door leaf shall be 48 inches (1219 mm) nominal. Means of egress doors in a Group I-2 occupancy used for the movement of beds shall provide a clear width not less than 411/2 inches (1054 mm). The height of door openings shall not be less than 80 inches (2032 mm). I'm not sure how to classify a door as oversized other than the fact that it hasn't be tested based on this criteria found in the IBC. 716.5.7.2 Oversized doors. Oversized fire doors shall bear an oversized fire door label by an approved agency or shall be provided with a certificate of inspection furnished by an approved testing agency. When a certificate of inspection is furnished by an approved testing agency, the certificate shall state that the door conforms to the requirements of design, materials and construction, but has not been subjected to the fire test. |

Ken: Actually, the IBC limits ALL means of egress doors to a 48-inch-wide leaf, whether they are fire-rated or not. Ron Geren, FCSI, AIA, CCS, CCCA, SCIP www.specsandcodes.com |
