Any one encountered this before? (3'-6" by 3'-10" in a smoke rated wall). We're not finding anything. |

Counter shutter S-rated on the wall face or inside the jamb, is the only solution I've seen. |

Yeah, that's what we were thinking, too, but there's always hope that someone has invented a new mouse trap. Thanks! |

I had a thought, a simple fire rated window rated for exterior use might just be able to pass the "S" rating. An example: http://www.fyre-tec.com/pages/fire_rated/slider/900_features.html |

The UL Marking and Application Guide for Doors, Windows and Related Hardware says this (page 7): "Windows in smoke partitions must be sealed to resist the free passage of smoke or be automatic closing upon detection of smoke." It's possible there is an auto-closing transaction window, but thus far, responses to my inquiries have been negative. |

The best solution unfortunately is a nice, easy slider window backed by a fire-rated coiling door on a local smoke detector or controlled by the fire alarm system. Our sliding transaction windows usually occur in healthcare settings where there is an increased focus on accessibility. By the time a window is fire-rated and then has some sort of auto-close function you can never meet the force requirement to manually open and close it. A collateral virtue of the coiling door is that it can provide security for sensitive areas (pharmacies). |
