Has anyone every specified a custom wood door? Most AWI/AWS standards wouldn't apply - i think it's carved from a solid slab of wood. I can see including some tolerances, but anything else you would include? Any sample spec are appreciated!! |

Years ago, I did specify an exterior custom wood door to replace a historical wood door. And the best advice I can give you is to find a crafter in the project area to consult with. |

Robin, Two decades ago, I worked on a multi-million $ log home in Southern Alberta. One moose door and one wolf door. Both doors were a private commission with a renowned artist/wood carver. Spec section never written. The expertise of the artist/carver along with coordination with the contractor for opening sizes and weights was required. Hardware was important, especially hanging hardware. I think concealed pivot hardware was used because there isn't evidence of hardware other than the latching/locking hardware. Also timing for install by the contractor. I don't think a spec section is required for a piece of artwork custom made for the project. I think the artist was from Minnesota or Wisconsin. Please send me an e-mail and I will scan and sent photos. wayne.yancey@crtkl.com |
