I have been referencing this withdrawn ASTM in my metal railing spec. Yikes. Anyone know if there is a comparable ASTM i should be referencing? |

General and detailed information about pipe and tube railings is covered in NAAMM AMP 521, Pipe Railing Systems Manual, which contains information on typical pipe and tube railing construction, as well as photographs and drawings. NAAMM AMP 521 also contains structural design information for pipe and tube railings. |

for design I reference IBC 1607.8 which references 4.5.1 of ASCE 7 and then the loads are stated. what is wrong with stating that. as for testing, that is not in the ASTM that i can see. so perhaps as ASCE and IBC have it covered ASTM said why bother? |

I have often wondered why a deflection criteria is not specified for hand/guardrails. As it stands now the rails could be quite wobbly but could be allowed by code so long as they resisted the required loads. David G. Axt, CCS, CSI, SCIP Specifications Consultant Axt Consulting LLC |

While not specifically germane to the standards in question, I also like to review welded joint finishing of metal railings occasionally for projects where appearance is of concern. The National Ornamental & Miscellaneous Metals Association (NOMMA) has a downloadable, illustrated “Joint Finishes Guide” at www.nomma.org/page/architects. There is also a “Finishes Manual” at the same site. "Fast is good, but accurate is better." .............Wyatt Earp |
