AISC 303 - http://discus.4specs.com/discus/messages/7868/6895.html has completely redefined AESS categories into a logical listing (see Chapter 10 in this free download, courtesy of AISC). As far as I know, MasterSpec has not been modified to incorporate this information so we're on our own for now kids. Hope it helps. For many years we have relied on the "AESS Supplement" published in the May 2003 issue of Modern Steel Construction. That article provided a similar spreadsheet listing the components of AESS from which you could choose a la cart fashion to create different quality grades. We would usually have two, defined as what you can touch and what you see from 20 or more feet away. This makes AESS conform to the 3 + 1 "C's": Clear, concise, correct and current. The numerical AESS designations are actually flipped from what you might be used to if you are familiar with the old system. Under the old system (Supplement to May 2003 issue of Modern Steel Construction) AESS 3 was the bottom end of the AESS spectrum and AESS 1 was the top. Under the new AISC Code of Standard Practice, AESS 1 is the bottom and AESS 4 is the top. As I understand it, this is more closely aligned with the Canadian Institute of Steel Construction's (CISC) guide for AESS. The AISC wanted to essentially match what the CISC was already doing. Disclaimer: I have not made an exhaustive comparison between the two to know what the differences are (if any) between the AISC's and the CISC's guides for AESs. Because many of us have a provision in Div 01, e.g. 014200, that says the dates of reference standards are those current as of the date of the Contract Documents, unless otherwise indicated. So someone could be asking for best quality, and get the lowest quality? And vice versa? Unless the definitions from a full length spec spell it out further. Even then, at best that would just cause a conflict with the referenced standard. This might be one good example of why some people specify references with publication dates. However, seems to be a never-ending, thankless task. I still prefer the method of Division 01 wording including the unless otherwise indicated, and in a case like this, indicate it with a date until fully coordinating the definitions in a new copy of the master. There was a 2010 standard. But it does not appear to have anything about the categories. The concept of the categories still seems to come from the example specification and matrix that was in the 2003 supplement.
