I have to admit, I have been known to roll my eyes when I see posts that ask where a product should be specified because imho, it usually doesn't matter as long as it is referenced clearly and a minimum amount of logic is used. So here I am asking something similar. In my case, I have a standalone spec section that covers typically foreign trips to inspect stone quarries and dry layout procedures. It is a separate section, because the stone could show up in Division 4,7,9, and/or 12 Sections. Considering 01 4000 Quality Requirements bc that is where special inspections is located. or...maybe Division 4 and just reference the other locations. Thoughts? |

When I own DIVISION ONE, I have been migrating similar Sections to it for several years now, and would create a subset of 01 45 00 Quality Control. My (now old) CSI MasterFormat 2004 guide lists 01 45 26 - Plant Inspection Services. I might change that "26" to what day of the month I wrote the Section on an call it a day (highly scientific reasoning, carefully applied). When the DIV ONE is by the client (not unusual in our Hospital and University centered practice), I would put it at the front of one of the Divisions you suggest. I still like to use "Common Standards for..." for those situations. By the way, for many years I worked for a firm that always seemed to decide the only possible stone for a project came from Italy and would require selection at the Quarry by the Architect. Florence Hotel, Check. Rental Alfa Romeo, Check. Early Morning quarry walk at Carrara, Check! |

Just out of curiosity, What's the most exotic junket you ever got as a spec writer to visit a supplier's factory or site? Mine was to Kenosha, Wisconsin on a cold February day to hang 80 ft above ground on a scaffold to see how their screws installed in the field. Brian, Your question seemed to be getting offtrack. One of my clients provided me with a section they wanted inserted to establish procedures for aesthetic requirements for stone. It designated an unnamed "Owner's Consultant" to visit the quarries in Italy, Spain and Brazil, and make decisions that would optimize the quality of stone accepted. The assigned title was: Section 044050 Stone Aesthetic. David Lorenzini, FCSI, CCS Architectural Resources Co. |

I suggest Section 044013 - Stone Materials, where all the stone materials for the project would be identified and described, and assigned symbols like ST-1, ST-2, etc. The quality assurance for the stone materials, including trips to quarries, would be specified in this section along with the stone materials, which in my opinion is the correct place to specify this type of requirement. Then the sections specifying stone masonry, stone tile, stone countertops, etc. could simply use those symbols and cross-reference 044013. |

Private jet to a ceiling product factory. Not too exotic except for the jet. Upon return, our cars were waiting for us on the tarmac right next to the jet. That I could get used to. |

Brian, I agree with Greta (again). Let's not make this more complicated than it needs to be. Whether you are selecting stone from a pile of samples at a local distributor or at the quarry in Italy, use the same place in your specifications. - |
