I have to say, I'm actually shocked that there isn't a Barrier Cable Section available through MasterSpec or BSD.

It's only responsible for making sure that cars/people don't plummet to their death.

There are code requirements, industry standards, best practices, but no spec?

Barrier Cable Systems, Inc. has a good spec section on their web site: http://barriercables.net/assets/barrier-cable-systems-specifications.pdf
I prepare this spec section in both Div. 3 and Div.5, in both 16 division and 48 division format. Brian I won't share my spec with you yet because I don't think it is very good, I think it needs work, yet its been used successfully in several jobs, and requested by fellow specifiers.

Using the following from MasterSpec would scare me.

WIRE ROPE PARKING GARAGE GUARDS
Wire Rope Parking Garage Guards: 3/4-inch- (19-mm-) diameter, zinc-coated steel wire ropes with wire rope fittings for securing to parking garage columns and walls and for tightening wire rope.

Looks like I'll be writing one myself soon as well. Maybe we can compare notes someday.

Brian, I am having a bad day, fighting allergies and not feeling well, if you provide me your email address, I'll forward you a PDF of my last issued spec section and you an take a look at it. All my work is in the private sector, so my specs don't follow strict requirements, they work.

I've never seen a 5-Part specification before.

The performance criteria might be a little outdated, as i read the current IBC requirements.

Looks like a fair amount of work to be done to clean that section up into something usable.

Anon, a good specifier should never copy word for word another specification, even if it is provided by a paid service. The links I provided are for information only. The specs I prepare are based on my experience, my database, and the specifics of the installation, including location. As an example I would never use a Cement Plaster specification from Masterspec in So Florida, it is not prepared for So Florida and the Cement Plaster installation will eventually fail, because cement plaster is applied differently in So Florida than anywhere else in the country.

Since Brian brought this up, I have reached out to one of our local Barrier Cable Subcontractors, I have forwarded my standard spec section and they have promised to review it. I will report back on the results. They are currently bidding on one of my projects. For those who wish to reach out to them, ask for Lisa: http://barriercableconstructors.com/contact_us.html

Probably did, but that was 10 projects ago + a hurricane, you should not have waited so long to reach out, I don't have an answer for you Brian.

Hi Brian, as you are developing one you might find this useful in locating some standards and possible requirements: https://www.wbdg.org/FFC/DOD/UFGS/UFGS%2034%2071%2013.16.pdf

Brian,

Within the past 3 months I have created such a section, performance based.

Please e-mail me at wayne.yancey@crtkl.com for my creation.

Brian, the project I spoke to you about at the end of March went thru bidding, has a GC on board and construction has yet to start, the Architect has not received any comments regarding the Barrier Cable Railings. If I should receive any feedback, I will report here.

A barrier cable railing mounted on a rooftop can be put to double use as a strike termination device in a lightning protection system, eliminating the need for and cost of air terminals (lightning rods) and conductor cables around the perimeter of roof. This is based upon my interpretation of NFPA 780 and other lightning protection standards. Yet I have not seen this in practice. If you have seen this or have a project in which it might be useful, please contact me at michael at chusid dot com.
