I'm attempting to edit our office master specification for FRP Doors and Aluminum Frames. Our spec is based off of the spec available from Special-Lite. It seems extremely detailed. I assume it's this way to limit products to only Special-Lite. I usually begin with Arcom/MasterSpec as a template but they do not appear to have a section for FRP doors. Any suggestions on where to start, or other specs available for reference other than Special-Lite? |

BSD has a FRP Door Section that includes aluminum frames. The entire draft spec is only 8 pages, which is probably only 2-3 with normal selections. |

I use FRP doors and frames on several of my projects. These are all FRP with FRP frames and are available for fire-rated as well as non-fire-rated openings. I like Chem-Pruf, but my office master includes Corrim Company as well. These are much more appropriate where there are conditions that would corrode aluminum as well as steel. I've been told that pultruded fiberglass frames are superior because they do not have any corrosion problems that aluminum may have in some environments. Not sure how to compare the stability of pultruded vs. aluminum but I do know it can even be used for structural members. I suspect that a certain FRP door mfr who offers only aluminum frames has managed to get school districts to require their type even though others may be better. Sounds like it could be a case of when your only tool is a hammer, every problem is a nail. |

The vast majority of my company's work is in K-12 schools and some higher education. FRP doors from Special-Lite, Curries, etc. are routinely specified because they take a lot of abuse. The Special-Lite spec I have appears to be written in a way to disqualify all or most of their competitors. The advice here is helpful as usual. Thanks. I was also able to track down a spec from Curries which is also helping. |
