It is not often that I get to share the knowledge. It may be possible to get a plain steel core wire without a galvanized coating from a foreign source, but the standard in the United States (ASTM F668) is that the core wire is galvanized. It is not really overkill in terms of the longevity of the installation, because the pvc coating can break down, thus making the core wire vulnerable to rapid deterioration. However, a nuance that can raise cost unnecessarily in most instances is having the pvc coating bonded to the wire rather than merely extruded. For most applications, a galvanized core wire with an extruded vinyl coating is good enough. The claim that the extruded-and-bonded coating is more durable than the extruded is true, but the types of stresses that might cause the extruded coating to come off are rarely imposed on a fence installation.
