Hi - are there any suggested weight capacity requirements for floating vanities (similar to grab bars), that i should specify?

Woodwork standards for some time have dictated load and other test criteria for casework...based on SEFA 8 standard. But since your "floating vanities" (I presume functionally a base cabinet) could be deemed a wall (hung) cabinet, I'd reference woodwork standard but qualify "floating vanities" as complying with base cabinet loading criteria (since wall cabinet criteria is less stringent). Depending on supporting wall construction, there may need to be floor-anchored steel angle/channel support/frame within hollow wall construction or post-installed anchors into concrete/masonry walls. In any case, you might want to specify structural calculations, so fabricator/sub at least goes through the exercise of an engineered design...of casework and supporting anchorage.

Maybe check with Pat McHugo at Rangine Corp. They engineer and make the Rakks counter brackets and supports. Very helpful folks. www.rakks.com

I recall a project for a birthing center at a hospital where a fold-down table was included. As we selected the appropriate fold down hardware, attached to an in-wall support frame, and discussed it with the structural engineer and the hospital, a perverse inflation took place. In the end the folding hardware was rated at 800 pounds with in wall framing to handle it. It came down to how many family members who were visiting the new mother and child could sit on the table if they were so inclined and all the chairs in the room were already taken.
