On a private bid. The owner wants to use a specific electrical contractor. I was going to add that to the Instructions to Bidders under Qualifications. Is there a better place to add that? |

Jeff, I put this in Division 01 Section 011100. Below is my wording; A. Employ Subcontractors pre-approved by Owner for: 1. Division 26 - Electrical: [company name], [contact name], [phone number], [contact name@companyname.com] B. Relations and responsibilities between Contractor and Subcontractors assigned by Owner shall be as defined in Conditions of the Contract. Assigned Subcontractors shall, in addition: 1. Furnish to Contractor, bonds covering faithful performance of subcontracted work and payment of all obligations thereunder when Contractor is required to furnish such bonds to Owner. 2. Purchase and maintain liability insurance to protect Contractor from claims for not less than the limits of liability which Contractor is required to provide to Owner. This is how I was taught in Canada several decades ago and is in my latest and greatest private project out for bidding as week speak. It is located in a Division that will be a Contract Document. I am certain there will be many, many , many, many opinions about this topic. This should get you started. Wayne |

Electrical (prime) contractor, or electrical subcontractor? In the past, for design-bid-build, open to anyone, a comment in the advertisement would have been appropriate, to help bidders decide if they want to bid on the project. If bidders have access to all bidding documents online, that courtesy probably isn't necessary anymore, but I'd do it anyway. I wouldn't put it in instructions to bidders. I think I would use 00-7326 - Assigned Contracts. Wayne's suggestion of 01-1100 is interesting, if only because it's more likely to be seen. I don't think I'd go as far, though; I don't know why an assigned subcontractor would not be subject to the same requirements as one selected by the contractor. |

Sheldon and Wayne, thanks for the input. Sorry for the delay. I have been swamped with work and not able to respond. |
