Due diligence requires that you visit the country you'll be working in at least twice, preferably just at the end of tourist season. Most of the shops are still open, and they won't be as crowded, so there will be less chance of spilling your wine on the ... what was it?

Nice thought but yet to happen. A shame really. I would love to go globe trotting and actually see some of the projects I've worked on, or the quarries I've specified stone from, or the exterior building skin panel manufacturers I've specified, or meet the people I've only had phone or email conversations with...

Ha! It's the principals who go to visit the plant in Germany or the quarry in Italy. Funny how they don't bring back much useful information.
